Longtime Angel Fans Have Seen Enough

July 09, 1994

I have finally had it.

I have been an avid fan of the Angels for more than 30 years. I have been a season-ticket holder for the last 20 years.

But enough is enough.

I have grimly watched the Angels lose their best players through trades and free agency. I have witnessed two spontaneously applied philosophies: "Nurturing the kids for the future," and, "It's now or never."

And firing Buck Rodgers, one of the original Angels, a man who had the audacity to call things as they really were . . . that was the last straw.

I'm through.

The players can moan and complain all they want about their fans, and frankly, I can't blame them. Every ballplayer wants to have supportive fans fill the park. Unfortunately, these players have no idea how we have suffered over the years of miserable losing, heartbreaking disappointment, and now, excruciating boredom.

For me, it's over.

Both Angel President Richard Brown and General Manager Bill Bavasi agree that "the talent is there" and can't understand why the team is underachieving.

Perhaps it's time for them to dial 1-800-GET REAL, where the laughter of Buck Rodgers can be heard.

Regarding the Angels' ownership and management, do the Cowboy and his girl feel they owe some kind of debt to the Bavasi family? Didn't Gene Autry have enough with some of Buzzie's bizarre moves (i.e. Nolan Ryan)? I guess not.
