WORLD CUP USA '94 / QUARTERFINALS : Spotlight : WAKE IS BETTER

July 09, 1994|BILL DWYRE

Maybe It's a Cultural Thing: Ireland welcomed home its team Thursday with a celebration in Dublin's Phoenix Park. Officials, speculating that this was a form of the traditional joyous Irish wake, said that the crowd, there to salute a team that had been ousted rather ignominiously in a 2-0 defeat by the Dutch, numbered about 100,000.

In 1966, in the World Cup in England, Italy lost to North Korea, 1-0. When the Italians returned to Rome, they were greeted by fans throwing rotten fruit.
