Movies to Tape

July 10, 1994|Kevin Thomas

A Woman Under the Influence (Cinemax Monday at 4:05 a.m.) and Opening Night (Cinemax Thursday at 11:30 a.m.), both written and directed by John Cassavetes in the 1970s, feature Gena Rowlands in two of her finest portrayals, first as a woman struggling to maintain her mental stability, the second as a stage actress terrified by the prospect of middle age.

The Return of Martin Guerre (KCET Saturday at 10 p.m.), Daniel Vigne's superb and constantly surprising 1982 French film starring Gerard Depardieu as a returning, long-absent husband, was remade as "Sommersby."
