* "Stand Up And Speak"--A series of three books by Alan Friedenberg for grades 4-8. From Curriculum Associates, Billerica, Mass.; (800) 225-0248.

* "When I Say No I Feel Guilty" and "Yes, I Can Say No"--Assertiveness guides by Los Angeles psychologist Manuel Smith. The widely used Social Thinking and Reasoning program is based on "When I Say No I Feel Guilty," available in libraries and bookstores. "Yes, I Can Say No" (Arbor House, 1986), which grew out of the STAR program, is available only in libraries.

* STAR program workbooks--Curriculum for the Irvine Unified School District's assertiveness training program aimed at middle school students. Information: (714) 552-4882.

* Toastmasters International--Group that helps people overcome fear of public speaking by doing it. Fee: $18 for six months and $16 new membership fee, which covers cost of manual. Each club has own dues fee. Members must be 18 but youth groups can be formed. Information: (714) 858-8255.

* California Self-Help Center Information and Referral Line--UCLA-based service that can put callers in touch with self-help groups focused on overcoming shyness and promoting assertiveness; (800) 222-LINK.
