THE NEXT LOS ANGELES / TURNING IDEAS INTO ACTION : Steps we can take to make Southern California safer and more livable.

July 17, 1994

Six months ago today the deadly Northridge earthquake rocked Los Angeles, leaving freeways buckled, homes destroyed, lives shattered. For this city, the events of Jan. 17 drove home a message. The time had come to move beyond simply patching up the masonry and questioning our love affair with the automobile. It was time to set aside old assumptions about this place and find new, innovative ways to solve our problems--from education to crime to transportation.

In February, The Times published a special section on The Next Los Angeles, in which leading experts put forth new ideas on critical issues facing the region. The aim was to spark community discussion and debate about what Los Angeles might become.

In today's second special section on The Next Los Angeles, the focus shifts from what's possible to what's practical. Inside, experts are joined by community leaders and the public at large in proposing and evaluating concrete solutions to real-world problems. The aim this time is to move forward toward The Next Los Angeles with steps we can take now to make the Southland safer, more prosperous, move livable.
