Topics / SCHOOLS : Board Votes for New Fees

July 21, 1994

Over the objections of many property owners, the board of the Alhambra City and High School Districts voted last week to create a landscape and lighting district to raise $1 million a year.

The money will be used to maintain playgrounds and gymnasiums that are used by the public.

"It will make our playgrounds safer for the public when they come in to use them," district Supt. Heber Meeks said.

But Alhambra resident John Williams said the funds should come out of the district's $100-million annual budget, and not from assessment fees.

"They haven't even begun to take Draconian measures to find these funds in their own district," Williams said.

Meeks countered that the district already had cut $2 million from its budget.

Residents of Alhambra and Monterey Park who live within both the elementary and high school districts will pay $23 per household. Households in only the high school district will pay $9.20. Households in multifamily units will pay $19.73 per unit or $7.89 per unit, depending on where they live.
