COMPTON : School Budget Reduces Staff, Increases Books

July 21, 1994

The state administrator appointed to run the Compton Unified School District has approved a budget for next school year that cuts funds for paying employees but increases spending for books and supplies.

Administrator Jerome Harris also passed a five-year plan for the troubled district to repay nearly $20 million in state loans. The plan includes reducing staff by attrition or possibly by layoffs.

The 1994-95 budget increases spending for supplies by 1.5%, from $6.7 million to $6.8 million. The funds include $400,000 for new books. Funds for teacher salaries will decrease from $53.1 million to $51.4 million.
