CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION by Alan M. Dershowits (Berkley: $10; 398 pp.). In these collected columns, the nation's best-known legal gadfly champions a broad interpretation of First Amendment freedoms, even if it means defending unpalatable opinions. He argues that most conservatives are actually "statists," who support the power of the state over the rights of individuals, and laments the intellectual mediocrity of the current Supreme Court. It will be interesting to see if future editions include comments on the media circus surrounding the O.J. Simpson case.
