World IN BRIEF : ARGENTINA : Police Set Off Bomb Found at Airport

August 03, 1994|From Times Staff and Wire Services

Police detonated a bomb found at the Buenos Aires metropolitan airport, two weeks after a blast killed nearly 100 people at the offices of the main local Jewish group. The device, which officials said appeared designed to produce noise but not destruction, was found during a one-day general strike backed by transport workers and other opposition trade unionists. No one claimed responsibility. An Air Force Police official said the device was found in a restaurant bathroom at the Jorge Newberry Airport near central Buenos Aires. Disposal experts removed the bomb and detonated it in an isolated part of the airfield, he said.
