HERMOSA BEACH : City Council OKs Stiffer Building Code

August 04, 1994|JAMES BENNING

Owners of unreinforced masonry buildings will be required to strengthen the structures under an ordinance passed by the City Council.

About 50 Hermosa Beach buildings will require the improvements, which include the installation of parapet bracing and wall anchors before the buildings are retrofitted.

City officials estimate the cost to upgrade the buildings at $3 million. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2002.

Building owner Perry Arnold, who opposed the plan, said the $40,000 it will cost to retrofit his Hermosa Avenue building, built in 1928, will not guarantee its safety in an earthquake.

"Maybe my best bet is just to tear it down," he said.
