HARBOR AREA : Advisory Board Sought for Navy Base Cleanup

August 04, 1994

Residents are being sought to help plan an environmental cleanup of Navy properties in San Pedro.

They will form a panel to give advice on cleaning up the Defense Fuel Support Point in the community and other sites near two adjacent Navy family housing areas, said Lt. Karl Johnson, public affairs officer with the Long Beach Naval Station.

Johnson said ravines near the housing on Palos Verdes Drive North and Taper Avenue were filled with materials from ships returning from World War II. Waste oils, paints, solvents, scrap metal, cables, gas masks and metal drums are buried in the ravines, he said.

Testing for potential hazardous waste contamination on the sites has already begun.

The deadline for advisory board applications is Aug. 31.

Information: Lt. Karl Johnson, (310) 547-7219.
