Deadline for Quake Relief Is Extended

August 06, 1994|MACK REED

Disaster aid officials announced they have extended the deadline to apply for earthquake relief to Oct. 17. The previous deadline was Sept. 16.

Victims of the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake will have until Oct. 17 to apply for federal disaster aid, according to a statement issued Friday by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services.

The Small Business Administration also pushed back the deadline to Oct. 17 for home and business owners to apply for disaster recovery loans, the statement said.

"Despite the extension, individuals should not procrastinate," the statement warned. "They should apply as soon as possible. The sooner they apply, the sooner they will receive assistance if they are found eligible."

Since the earthquake, nearly 608,000 people have applied for assistance. FEMA has paid out nearly $1 billion for emergency repairs, disaster housing and rental and mortgage assistance. The SBA has approved $3 billion in disaster loans.

Also, the state Individual Family Grant Program has paid more than $100 million in grants for needs not met by insurance or other aid, the statement said.
