Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Saturday for a nine-day visit to Canada. The queen, Canada's head of state, will spend three days in Halifax, then fly on to Victoria, British Columbia, where she will officially open the Commonwealth Games.

She is scheduled to watch some events, including swimming and gymnastics, and participate in a round of building and garden dedications and dinners with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien. Prince Philip is scheduled to tour the Khutzeymateen Valley in northern British Columbia. Philip, president of World Wildlife Fund International, has called for conservation of the valley, a home to grizzly bears.

Also on the itinerary: a brief visit to Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories, before the royals depart on Aug. 21.
