SHERMAN OAKS : Power Shift Feared With Proposed Zone

August 16, 1994|KAY HWANGBO

Richard Close, the president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn., says his main concern about a proposal to make Sherman Oaks a redevelopment area is the potential loss of local control.

Because Sherman Oaks has been declared a disaster area rather than a blighted area, the city Community Redevelopment Agency may not be subject to state laws that would otherwise require it to submit its plan to a citizens advisory committee, according to state Sen. Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica).

A citizens advisory committee known as a Project Area Committee could help the CRA identify which construction and reconstruction projects should be done, and help set priorities among them.

Hayden and CRA officials will discuss the benefits and potential problems of the proposed redevelopment zone at a community meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Union Federal Savings Bank, 13300 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks.
