A three-day seminar designed to train community leaders and inner-city youths to help prevent violence and substance abuse will run Tuesday through Thursday at USC's Seeley G. Mudd Auditorium.

The prevention conference, with a theme of "The Culture Cures," will include a youth summit on Wednesday at which urban students will discuss ways to reduce gang violence and substance and alcohol abuse.

The seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The fee is $109. Information: (213) 766-2345.

On Saturday, Councilwoman Rita Walters will lead a community forum on blight and illegal business operations in the 9th District.

The forum is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon at Manual Arts High School, 4131 S. Vermont Ave. The agenda will include a discussion on ways to eliminate blight caused by abandoned buildings, restoring vacant lots that have become dumping grounds, how to deal with slumlords and illegal business operations.

Walters, whose district stretches from Chinatown to portions of South-Central, will hold a question-and-answer session.

The forum also will feature presentations by officials and inspectors from the city Building and Safety Department.
