PORTRAITS OF NATIVE AMERICANS: 23 Postcards from the Field Museum photographs by Charles Carpenter (The New Press: $9.95; 48 pp., paperback original). During the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibit (the fair Judy Garland visits in "Meet Me in St. Louis"), indigenous peoples from around the world were displayed in artificial villages like zoo animals. It's surprising that these dignified portraits emerged from that setting. Carpenter obviously respected his subjects and sympathized with their plight: His emotions remain evident 90 years later.
