MTA Abolishing Monthly Bus Fare

August 28, 1994

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will begin a new bus fare structure on Sept. 1 that will abolish the regular $42 monthly pass and raise fees from $1.10 to $1.35 for one-way fares.

The monthly pass, according to MTA spokesman Greg Davy, was not offering passengers an equitable fare. "The people who most needed it could not afford it," Davy said. The increase in the fare was made to help balance the budget.

The MTA hopes the elimination of the monthly pass will lead to increased use of bus tokens, which cost 90 cents for a one-way fare, a 33% markdown off the regular cash fare. The tokens are sold in bags of 10 for $9. The gold and silver colored coins will be sold at 460 locations throughout Los Angeles County.

Information on token outlets: (213) 972-6235.
