Safe Streets Act

August 28, 1994

Regarding Assemblyman Richard Katz's (D-Sylmar) bill AB 3148, which would take away the cars of unlicensed drivers (Aug. 14), I hope everyone is watching this to see how good intentions get watered down.

In order to get a suspended license, you have to get several tickets or a drunk driving conviction, and anyone that still drives without a license should have his or her car taken away. But for our lawmakers to vote for the bill, it's been changed so that the car could only be taken after the scofflaw has been stopped twice, and if the person is married it would take three times before a vehicle was taken. That's too many chances.

My son has been hit twice in three years and neither driver had a license or insurance. When I was 16 and went to the DMV, my booklet said driving was a privilege, not a right. The bill still has to go through two more committees to get approved.
