OUTLOOK

Don't be fooled by Fullerton's dismal record last year. The Indians are in the enviable position of returning 14 starters--including six who play both ways. However, before the band starts to play the school's victory song too loudly, Smilowitz is realistic about his team's chances and admits there may be potential problems for the Indians. Like a declining school enrollment--a problem, he says, which in the long run will have a negative impact on the school's athletic program. Fullerton also has a lackluster kicking game and lacks experience in what he called "important areas" of the game. While this may sound like mere doom and gloom from a second-year coach, Smilowitz truly believes his team might be able to win enough league games to qualify for postseason play. No doubt Smilowitz's hopes are pinned on the performance of the 1991 freshman team, which had a 10-0 record and has many of those players starting for the Indians this year. Smilowitz said if he can get some stellar performances from tight end Schatz, a potential all-county player, miracles could indeed happen. Of course, if he could get those former freshmen team members to turn in a repeat performance. . . .
