United launches its short-haul budget-fare carrier on Oct. 1 with an initial schedule of 184 daily flights in eight West Coast markets. The shuttle is a product of the new employee-owned UAL Corp., in which the workers surrendered billions of dollars' worth of wages and benefits in the hope of making the company more competitive.
