WASHINGTON : Mideast Mission

October 04, 1994

Secretary of State Warren Christopher is scheduled to head for the Middle East on Sunday to continue his attempt to broker a peace treaty between the region's most implacable foes--Israel and Syria.

Israeli and Syrian officials have not met face to face for months, so all negotiations are handled through U.S. mediators.

Christopher plans to meet with both Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Syrian President Hafez Assad.

A senior U.S. official says the talks between Israel and Syria "are more serious, more detailed than ever before." But, he adds, a breakthrough "is not imminent, I can tell you that."
