Montebello schools chief Darline P. Robles has resigned to become superintendent of the Salt Lake City School District.
Robles has held teaching or administrative positions in the Montebello Unified School District for 21 years. She became superintendent in July, 1991, and helped steer the 32,300-student district away from insolvency.
Board President Darrell H. Heacock said that Robles, 44, will remain in her $97,000-a-year job until at least the end of December to help the district trim $10.2 million to balance the budget.
School officials have demanded that teachers take a pay cut and have asked the state to appoint a mediator.
