NORTHRIDGE : CSUN Plans 2-Day Forum on Families

October 05, 1994|MAKI BECKER

In conjunction with the United Nations International Year of the Family, Cal State Northridge is sponsoring "Families Under Fire," a two-part forum to address the status of children in today's society and the media's impact on concepts of family values.

On Oct. 11, Eleanor Maccoby, a retired psychology professor and co-chairwoman of the Carnegie Task Force on Meeting the Needs of Young Children, will examine how the status of women affects the status of children.

Maccoby has just returned from the world population conference in Cairo, said Susan Crow, director of development of CSUN's School of Communication, Health and Human Services.

"It's a hot issue now, but it hasn't been in the United States," said Crow, who hopes that the forum will bring more attention to family and child issues.

On Nov. 1, the second day of the forum, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Freedman will give a lecture on the media's response to poverty.

The two-day event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (818) 885-2818.
