ORANGE COUNTY NEWSWATCH

October 05, 1994|Jerry Hicks

PARENTS' NIGHT OUT: Students at Pio Pico Elementary in Santa Ana generally come from a low-income area, but that doesn't mean their parents don't want a good education for them. Nearly 200 of those parents graduate themselves tonight. They've completed an eight-session training course designed to help them prepare their youngsters for college. . . . "Parents at this school are amazing," says its principal, Judith Magsaysay. "That represents 85% of our students."

SUPERVISOR PARKS: Two county parks soon to open were renamed today by county supervisors--after two of their own. Bolsa Chica Regional Park in Huntington Beach will become "Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park" and Wagon Wheel Regional Park in Coto de Caza will become "Gen. Thomas F. Riley Regional Park." . . . County staff made the suggestion, and Supervisor William G. Steiner pushed it, adding that Riley and Wieder--both retiring--played key roles in creating the parks that now bear their name.

PIONEER RILEY: Riley will be honored on his retirement at a Hyatt Regency Irvine dinner Thursday night. But there's another Riley being honored too. . . . A fund has been established to honor both the general and his wife, Emma Jane, who has been a leader in charity work since the Rileys moved here 30 years ago. She's involved with Catholic charities, led drives to help orphans and battered children, and helped support groups at both Chapman University and UC Irvine. . . . Says Emma Jane Riley: "I come from a family of pioneers. It was expected of us."

F FOR FAMILY: Santa Ana Police Lt. Felix G. Osuna must have impressed his 260 fellow cops--from 48 states and 16 countries--while recently attending the prestigious three-month FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Va. They picked the 21-year veteran, commander of Santa Ana's SWAT team, to speak for the class at their graduation. . . . "It was an incredible honor," Osuna says. "We're all family now."
