Clinton Stages Part II of High School Reunion

October 10, 1994| from Associated Press

WASHINGTON — President Clinton put Iraq and Haiti on hold for a few hours Sunday to welcome his Arkansas high school classmates to the White House for a 30th reunion--Part II.

Clinton, a member of the Hot Springs High School class of 1964, attended the formal July reunion in Arkansas and invited the gang back to Washington for a fall get-together.

Marty Walker, who helped organize the trip, said Clinton previously invited his class to the Arkansas governor's mansion after reunions for punch and cookies. Sunday's reception was an extension of that tradition.

Nearly 200 of the 335 classmates made the trip with their spouses and children, forming a line of more than 500 people Sunday to get their pictures taken with the President and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The classmates paid their own way to Washington and reimbursed the White House for the cost of the reception, Walker said.

The party lasted about two hours, ending when Clinton rushed off to an Oval Office meeting with his advisers on Iraq's move toward Kuwait.
