LOS ANGELES : Suspect Seized in Carjacking After Man Returned Baby

October 13, 1994

A man suspected of stealing a car with a 4-month-old girl in the back seat, then leaving the infant on a doorstep a short time later, was arrested today at the end of a police chase.

The carjacking occurred about 1:30 p.m. at a Union 76 station at Robertson Boulevard and 3rd Street, said Los Angeles Police Detective Raymond Futami of the Wilshire Station.

Michael Terrell Evans, 27, of Culver City was arrested about 6:30 p.m. Police followed the signal from an electronic locating device built into the car to find the white BMW near 54th Street and 11th Avenue, said Los Angeles police spokeswoman Sandra Castello.

Evans allegedly led police on a chase to Centinela and Field avenues in Inglewood, where he was arrested, she said.

Tuesday afternoon, the baby's mother, Karen Clark, expressed gratitude to the man for not hurting her child or husband, who had tried to stop the man from leaving in the BMW. Clark said she could "live without the BMW. I can't live without my daughter."
