Penhall, Sigalos Try to Conquer World of Offshore Boat Racing

The Lake Elsinore-based Team Suzuki Endurance, founded in 1980 by Bruce Hammer and John Ulrich, won its 100th main event and its 10th WERA endurance series championship last Saturday at Texas World Speedway.

STOCK CARS--The 19th annual October Classic this weekend in Bakersfield will offer stock car fans at Mesa Marin Raceway a little bit of everything. The racing feast starts Friday night with NASCAR Winston West qualifying and the Texaco Havoline 100 for late model stock cars. Saturday night will feature the U.S. Auto Club's True Value Hardware Silver Crown 100 and the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour's Spears Manufacturing 200. On Sunday afternoon, Winston West cars will run in the Spears Manufacturing 300. Winston Cup drivers Ken Schrader and Rick Carelli will compete against West Coast regulars Mike Chase, Gary Collins and Ron Hornaday Jr. The Sunday race can be seen on Prime Network at 6 p.m. . . . Orange Show Speedway will close its season Saturday night with points races for all five divisions. . . . Blythe Speedway will hold its final points race for sportsman and hobby stocks Saturday night. . . . Legend cars and street stocks will race Saturday night at Kern County Raceway.

SPRINT CARS--The Sprint Car Racing Assn. will hold a new race, Thunder by the River, at a new site, Mojave Valley Speedway in Bullhead City, Ariz., on Saturday night. The track is a one-third mile dirt oval, with Bill Dyer, Danny Pivovaroff and former sprint car champions Dean Thompson and Bubby Jones as promoters. Ron Shuman, who took over the SCRA lead with a victory in the Pacific Coast Open last Friday night at Hanford, will be after his 10th victory in the inaugural SCRA season. Shuman leads Rip Williams, 1,243-1,237, with three races remaining.

LAND SPEED--Standing water on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah has caused the Southern California Timing Assn. to cancel the combined Bonneville Speed Weeks and World Finals, which were scheduled to run through Tuesday. The SCTA season will close with a two-day meet Nov. 12-13 at the El Mirage Dry Lake.

OFF ROAD--Rod Millen led teammate Ivan Stewart across the finish line last Saturday in Denver to clinch a third consecutive Grand National truck drivers championship in the Mickey Thompson Stadium Series and the manufacturers cup for Team Toyota. Mercedes Gonzales became the first woman driver to win a main event in the Thompson series when she beat series champion Greg George in the SuperLite final. . . . The California 200, a La Rana desert race, will be held Saturday with a 9 a.m. start at the Teagle Wash, off Trona Road, near Ridgecrest.

MIDGETS--Ventura Raceway will present four classes of open-wheeled racing Saturday night. Featured will be USAC three-quarter midgets, California Dwarf cars, micro midgets and winged mini sprints.
