Supervisors Formally Oppose Prop. 188

October 20, 1994|JULIE FIELDS

Joining cities and counties throughout California, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution opposing a statewide ballot initiative that would wipe out local restrictions on smoking in public places.

Proposition 188, which is backed by tobacco giant Philip Morris Inc., would replace local smoking ordinances with a more lax statewide anti-smoking law. Only the state Legislature could amend the law, which would require a two-thirds vote.

The board approved its resolution opposing the measure during its meeting Tuesday.

Ventura County passed a strict anti-smoking ordinance in November. Other cities in the county, including Camarillo, Ojai and Ventura, also have passed similar ordinances during the past year.
