COSTA MESA : Spectacor Endorsed to Run Amphitheater

October 21, 1994|TOM RAGAN

The Spectacor Management Group, a Los Angeles-based company that runs the L.A. Coliseum and Sports Arena and the Long Beach Convention Center, could be next in line to operate the Pacific Amphitheatre at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

A four-member panel has recommended that the Orange County Fair and Exposition Center enter into a three-year contract with Spectacor.

The fair's board of directors will vote on the matter at its meeting Thursday.

Five bidders submitted applications to operate the 8,500-seat amphitheater, which was previously leased and operated by the Nederlander Organization. However, the outdoor facility was bought back by the Orange County Fair in April, 1993, after rock-'n'-roll bands caused complaints about late-night noise.

Spectacor was chosen over the others because it has experience in running government-owned facilities and promised to be sensitive to the needs of residents living in the area when booking bands, said Jill Lloyd, a spokeswoman for the fairgrounds.

If approved by the board of directors, the contract will take effect in January.
