Penalty Waved Off; Vaqueros Salvage Tie

October 21, 1994|TONY ALTOBELLI

COVINA — Freddie Knight's one-yard run with 1 minute 7 seconds remaining gave Covina a 31-31 tie with Rancho Alamitos in front of 2,300 Thursday night at Covina District Field.

The play before the touchdown run caused a ruckus. On fourth and inches from outside the one, and Rancho Alamitos holding a 31-25 lead, running back Knight was penalized for a false start. However, after a meeting by the referees and a discussion with both coaches, the penalty was waved off.

Since Knight didn't make contact with any other player, the officials ruled his movement legal.

With the ball back on the one, Knight lunged over the top, tying the score, 31-31. Moises Gallardo missed the extra-point kick.

Rancho Alamitos' Leo Kosi returned the ensuing kickoff to the Colts' 48-yard line. Quarterback John Frank (eight for 11, 184 yards) completed a 33-yard pass to Jeff Turbarg.

Turbarg fumbled and Covina's Jason Glapsy recovered, ending the final offensive threat of the game.

The Vaqueros (4-2-1) were led by Frank and senior running back Chris Young. Young rushed for 135 yards in 17 carries and two touchdowns. He also recovered a blocked field goal and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown.

Quarterback Michael Ulrich rushed for 155 yards in nine carries with two touchdowns for the Colts (5-1-1). He was also eight for 16 for 84 yards and one touchdown.
