BREA : School District OKs Grade-Change Policy

October 22, 1994|MIMI KO

The Brea Olinda Unified School District this week approved a policy prohibiting any district employee or trustee from changing a student's grade without a written or verbal explanation from the teacher who assigned the grade.

The new policy comes after months of investigation into a grade-changing scandal in which hundreds of Brea Olinda High School students' grades were altered without teacher approval--an illegal practice.

Attorneys for the Orange County Department of Education, which was asked to investigate, released a report last week saying that widespread confusion about policies and job responsibilities plagued the high school during the time when student grades were changed.

They also suggested that the school board draft clear policies to prevent further confusion.
