2 Ex-GOP Officials Favor Robb Over North

October 26, 1994| The Washington Post

RICHMOND, Va. — Two former Republican Administration officials spoke in favor of Democratic Sen. Charles S. Robb on Tuesday, saying Oliver L. North's conduct during the Iran-Contra affair makes him unworthy to be senator.

The election is "clearly one in which the Constitution is being challenged by a candidate who violated that law, admitted he violated those laws and then admitted that he lied to cover it up," said William E. Colby, CIA director under President Gerald R. Ford from 1973 to 1976. "That to me discredits him as a candidate."

Ex-Atty. Gen. Elliott L. Richardson said accountability of public officials was the sin in both Iran-Contra and Watergate. Richardson was attorney general in 1973 under President Richard Nixon.
