October 27, 1994| Reuters

AUSTIN, Tex. — Texas' top insurance official Wednesday put preliminary damages at $700 million in last week's flood, which resulted in 19 deaths and drove 12,000 people from their homes.

Texas Insurance Commissioner J. Robert Hunter estimated preliminary claims would amount to $400 million for private insurance companies and $300 million to the federal national insurance program.

Hunter, who formerly headed the federal flood insurance program, said his estimates were preliminary and did not include damage costs to pipelines, railroads and other infrastructure.
