SANTA MONICA : Fingerprints Lead to Arrests of 2 in Beating Death, Robbery

October 27, 1994

Days after Edward Broderick's bound and beaten body was found in his Santa Monica duplex, police arrested two Panorama City men in connection with the slaying and robbery.

Fingerprints found in Broderick's home linked the suspects to the Oct. 20 killing and led police to the apartment in the San Fernando Valley early Monday morning, said Santa Monica police spokesman Sgt. Gary Gallinot.

Police surrounded the apartment and a hostage negotiating team contacted the men inside, persuading them to surrender, Gallinot said.

Lloyd Smith, 24, and Norman Tooks Jr., 28, were booked on suspicion of murder in the death of 38-year-old Broderick. A third man arrested at the same time, Mark Anthony Henderson, 30, was booked on charges of receiving stolen property.

All three men were on parole for previous crimes, police said.

Broderick's body was discovered in his duplex in the 1400 block of Tenth Street, by a friend at 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 20. A coroner's report indicated he died from asphyxiation and from blunt-force trauma, Gallinot said.
