October 29, 1994|COREY LYONS

ORANGE — Senior quarterback Adam Hoover passed for 253 yards and three touchdowns and Orange County's leading receiver, Greg Jacobs, had 146 yards and a touchdown as Canyon shut out El Modena, 31-0, in a Century League game Friday at El Modena.

Jacobs, who hauled in six receptions to add to his lead, was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to Chapman General Hospital after converging on a tackle while playing at defensive back with 1 minute 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter. X-rays were taken but the extent of his injury was not disclosed by medical personnel.

The Comanches scored on their first possession, when Hoover hit Jacobs cutting across the field for a 53-yard touchdown on their third play of the game. Jacobs caught the ball on a dead run and raced down the right sideline for the score. Hoover, who used his speed and mobility to maneuver in the pocket and avoid the pass rush, completed 10 of 15 passes without an interception.

After forcing the Vanguards to punt, Canyon (6-2, 2-1) promptly scored on its next possession, when tailback K.C. Pelle turned a Hoover shovel-pass into a 78-yard touchdown. The score gave Canyon a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

El Modena was plagued by poor field position, and was held to only 104 yards total offense and forced to punt four times in the first half, as Canyon built a 28-0 lead. The Vanguards' starting quarterback, Jeremy Seltzer, completed three of 11 passes for 33 yards. He also was sacked three times. The Vanguards got inside the Comanche 25-yard line only once.
