Painkiller Quickly Gains Popularity: Three months after its introduction, Aleve has become the No. 3 over-the-counter painkiller with U.S. consumers. Aleve, which claims to give relief for as long as 12 hours, went on sale in June. By mid-September, it had surpassed Excedrin and Bayer in sales, according to marketing statistics. Aleve still has a way to go before it challenges Advil and Tylenol, but its distributor, Procter & Gamble, says it already has roughly twice the market share Advil had just after it went on the shelf 10 years ago. Aleve had roughly 6.8% of the $2.5-billion-a-year painkiller market in the four weeks ended Sept. 11, according to figures compiled by research firm Information Resources Inc.
