REGION : Churchgoers Urged to Vote, Share Stubs

November 06, 1994

In a last-call effort to fight black voter apathy, a national church group is calling on churchgoers citywide to vote Tuesday and bring their stubs to services Nov. 13.

Local churches participating in Bread for the World, a national alliance of churches devoted to fighting world hunger, include five in the Southwest area: Holman United Methodist, Messiah Baptist, Ascension Lutheran, West Angeles Church of God in Christ and First A.M.E.

Clergy from these churches are urging parishioners to produce voting stubs in a collective show of political force. They are also urging clergy who are not Bread for the World members to participate in the voter-stub campaign.

"Voter apathy is at an all-time high," said Benjamin Epps, pastor of Second Baptist Church in South Los Angeles and a Bread for the World board member.

The big turnout, he said, "will be a remarkable statement of the spiritual commitment to our democratic principles of action."
