SEOUL : U.S.-Korea Talks

November 08, 1994

Secretary of State Warren Christopher will visit Seoul today and Wednesday to consult with South Korean leaders on the nuclear agreement the Clinton Administration recently signed with North Korea.

Under the agreement, South Korea is expected to play the leading role in providing the Pyongyang regime with new light-water nuclear technology that cannot easily be used to make nuclear weapons. However, Washington and Seoul have not yet spelled out exactly how much money South Korea will have to spend on the North Korean project.

Christopher will also reaffirm American security commitments to South Korea, which still confronts the threat of more than 600,000 North Korean troops massed north of the demilitarized zone between the two countries.
