OUTLOOK

The Vanguards have their second new coach in as many seasons. Roussel replaces Steve Middleton, who resigned to become the head coach at Poway Mt. Carmel. A couple of league coaches view the Vanguards as a dark horse. Whether that proves to be true will depend a lot on some inexperienced players. Villmer, a third-year letterman, is a strong inside player, who will need to step up his game. He must score in double figures. He showed that ability at times last season, including a 28-point effort against Canyon. Goodwin can shoot and is also an adept passer. He is the quarterback on the Vanguards' football team. He had a 17-point, seven-assist game against Villa Park last season, an accomplishment Roussel would like to see more of this season. Of the returning players, Lee saw the most court time. The Vanguards lack size, but Roussel expects them to be solid defensively. They should be in contention for a third-place finish, maybe second if all goes well.
