November 18, 1994

The La Reina High girls' tennis team, led by doubles players Vicki Hull and Katie Nelson, and Catherine Chien and Heather Szabo, defeated South Hills, 12-6, in a semifinal match of the Southern Section Division V playoffs at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village on Thursday.

Hull and Nelson, the Regents' No. 1 doubles team, and No. 2 Chien and Szabo each swept their doubles matches against South Hills.

The win was the fifth in a row and 14th in the last 15 matches for La Reina (15-3), which will play Nordhoff in the championship match at The Claremont Club on Tuesday.

It will be La Reina's second appearance in a section final. The Regents lost to Mayfield, 13-5, in the 1-A Division final in 1986.

In other girls' tennis playoff matches:

Nordhoff 10, Rim of the World 8--Sarah Blaine and Cara Dunstan, Nordhoff's No. 3 doubles team, defeated No. 1 Amanda Scopen and Andrea Prince of Rim of the World, 6-2, to clinch the Rangers' victory in the final match of the Southern Section Division V semifinal at Ojai Valley Racquet Center.

The win was the sixth in a row for Nordhoff (14-6) and propelled the Rangers into the section final for the first time since 1978, when they lost to Westlake, 11-7, at the 1-A Division level.

Laguna Beach 16, Calabasas 2--The Coyotes' upset streak ended with a semifinal loss to the top-seeded team in the Southern Section Division II playoffs. The match was started at Alta Laguna Park in Laguna Beach, then moved to Laguna Beach High because the courts there have lights.
