Her Duty Is to Serve Her Country--Not Men

November 27, 1994

Re "Tailhook Behind Her, She Starts a New Life" (Nov. 8): Kudos to Paula Coughlin, late of the U.S. Navy, for coming forward and bringing to light what has been going on in the military (all branches) for as many years as we women have been serving our country--that there are those narrow-minded male simians who also thought we were there to serve them.

How wrong can a man be?

It has been 40 years since I took an oath to serve and protect my country. I marched, trained, schooled and saluted and took pride in wearing the Air Force uniform.

I really thought I was serving my country until I was rudely awakened to what some of the military thought about women in the service. Talk about disillusion.

It seems that nothing has changed. Perhaps what needs to be changed is to get rid of the top brass and re-educate the rest, starting in basic training.
