Deane Dana

November 27, 1994

We read with great interest your article regarding the retirement of Supervisor Deane Dana (Nov. 15).

Among the numerous accomplishments during Supervisor Dana's distinguished career were the protection and preservation of Los Angeles County's Ocean Lifeguards.

Through the leadership and vision of Supervisor Dana and his chief deputy, Don Knabe, the world's premier ocean lifeguard service was merged into the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

This merger came at a time when the citizens of the county were in danger of losing their lifeguards due to financial and political strains.

Each year 60 million people visit the Los Angeles County beaches and Los Angeles County lifeguards save over 10,000 lives in ocean rescues. Thanks to Supervisor Dana, the people of Los Angeles County can continue to enjoy their precious beaches secure in the knowledge that the Los Angeles County lifeguards will be there to make sure that all who come out to the beach enjoy their day and go home safe and alive.

DAN ATKINS, President

Los Angeles County Lifeguard Assn.
