Kieslowski has also repeated a scene from both of the earlier films, showing an old woman vainly trying to stuff a wine bottle into a recycling bin, but with a difference. Here, for the first time, someone comes to the woman's aid. If "Red" does turn out to be, as Kieslowski claims, his final film as a director, there can be no doubt but that he's gone out in brilliant style.

* MPAA rating: R, for a brief but strong sex scene. Times guidelines: It contains complex adult themes.
