The Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees appointed L.E. (Slim) Terrell this week to fill the seat vacated by Lou Lopez, who resigned last month to become an Anaheim City Council member.
Terrell was the fourth-highest vote-getter in the Nov. 8 election for three board seats. But there was some debate over whether the board should appoint him immediately or consider others.
Trustee Robert Stewart called for Terrell's appointment and said "the electorate has spoken. He was the No. 4 vote-getter."
But Trustee Joanne L. Stanton said the board should consider all who were interested in the seat, the district's usual policy when filling a vacancy.
"I feel it's a democratic process to give those in the community an opportunity" to be considered, Stanton said. "We can get a sense of where they are coming from."
The board voted 3 to 1, with Stanton opposing, to appoint Terrell. He will be sworn in at the next scheduled meeting on Jan. 19.
Also at Monday's meeting, Trustees R.A. (Molly) McGee and Harald G. Martin were sworn in for four-year terms. McGee was elected president of the board, Stewart was elected clerk, and Martin was elected assistant clerk.
