The city has asked the U.S. Postal Service to give Signal Hill its own ZIP code and post office.
By unanimous vote, the City Council directed City Manager Douglas N. La Belle to write a letter asking Long Beach Postmaster Ed Jenkins to include a new post office in the Postal Service's five-year capital improvement plan.
If Jenkins includes a Signal Hill facility in the five-year plan, the Postal Service will ask all Signal Hill residents and businesses whether they want their own ZIP code. The Postal Service will build the post office if a majority supports the new ZIP code.
Signal Hill, which is surrounded by Long Beach, is served by three Long Beach post offices, each with a separate ZIP code.
