MELGES SCOTT, Melges Scott, 22, is developmentally disabled and has completed a special-education program at Dorsey High School. He will continue special-education classes at Santa Monica City College and compete for the Santa Monica Track Club. Scott has been competing five or six years, mostly in marathons, and is in training as a Los Angeles outreach representative for Special Olympics. He is also with Student Run L.A., a school district-sponsored volunteer program that gets students involved in running and marathon training. HAPPY COOPER, Happy Cooper, 75, of Huntington Park is a Navy veteran who served aboard the transport ship Henrico during the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. It was the largest amphibious assault in the history of modern warfare, involving 5,000 ships, 2,000 aircraft and 160,000 soldiers, and covering a rugged 50-mile stretch of coastline. D-day marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. Less than a year after the invasion, Nazi Germany surrendered. Cooper, a first-class ship cook, was awarded the Purple Heart for his service during the invasion of Okinawa and also took part in the invasion of the Philippines. The New York native has lived in Huntington Park since 1961 and is a member of the South Gate posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cooper was interviewed by Kirby Lee. and
