BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Dixon Takes Ventura Down Victory Lane

Charles Dixon sank a five-foot shot from the lane with 11 seconds left to give Ventura High a 64-63 victory over Hueneme Wednesday night in a Channel League boys' basketball opener at Ventura.

Ventura (3-7) led by 13 points midway through the third period, but Hueneme rallied behind Yusef Johnson (20 points) and Aaron Cropper (19) and took a seven-point lead with under three minutes to play.

The Vikings missed two shots in the final seconds.

Newbury Park 69, Camarillo 66--Kes Andersen scored four points in the final 50 seconds to give the Panthers their first Marmonte League victory.

Anderson made a basket with 50 seconds to play, then sank a pair of free throws with four seconds left.

Josh Hill had 26 points for Camarillo.

Royal 68, Thousand Oaks 66--Scott Hambly connected on six three-pointers and scored 24 points for the Highlanders (9-4, 2-1) in a Marmonte League game.

Jeremiah Nesbitt had 21 points for Thousand Oaks (8-7, 2-1).

Westlake 68, Channel Islands 56--Nick Alexander of Westlake had 21 points and 17 rebounds for Westlake (10-1, 3-0) in a Marmonte League game.

Hart 51, Saugus 43--Mike Posey had 15 points for the Indians (8-7) in a Foothill League opener.

Harvard-Westlake 59, Alemany 44--Jason Collins had 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Wolverines (13-1) in a Mission League opener at Harvard-Westlake.

Buena 76, Oxnard 61--Mike Antrim had 13 points and Buena (7-4, 1-0) made 33 of 48 free throws in a Channel League opener.


Hart 59, Saugus 31--LaCresha Clark scored 17 of her 25 points in the first half for the Indians (10-4) in a Foothill League opener.

Providence 46, Buckley 38--Jill Vander Borght had 13 points for Providence (3-1) in a Liberty League opener.


Cal Lutheran 75, UC Santa Cruz 60--Paul LaMott had 23 points and seven rebounds for the Kingsmen (7-4) in a nonconference game at Santa Cruz.
