WEST VENTURA COUNTY FOCUS

CAMARILLO : Malathion Will Be Sprayed on Tuesday

February 06, 1995|J. E. MITCHELL

The eighth aerial spraying of the pesticide malathion will be conducted over eastern Camarillo on Tuesday in the continuing battle against the infestation of the crop-destroying Mediterranean fruit fly, officials said.

Residents living in the 16-square-mile eradication zone can expect the now-familiar trio of helicopters to be overhead starting at 9 p.m., after their departure from Camarillo Airport.

Barring bad weather, the spraying is expected to last about four hours, said Doug Hendrix, spokesman for the state and federal Cooperative Medfly Project.

State and federal regulations prevent the spraying of pesticides in winds greater than 10 m.p.h. or when there is a 50% or greater chance of rain in the 24-hour period after a spraying mission.

National Weather Service meteorologists said Sunday that while no rain and only slight breezes are expected, low clouds and ground fog may be present Tuesday evening in the Camarillo area.
