The union that represents about 1,300 Montebello public schoolteachers has threatened to go on strike if the district decides to impose a 5.3% pay cut.

Teachers are scheduled to vote Tuesday to authorize a walkout as soon as pay cuts are adopted, said a spokeswoman for the Montebello Teachers Assn.

District and union officials have been at odds since last summer, when the school board submitted a $92-million spending plan to the county education office that included salary cuts for all employees.

The school board agreed to cut teachers' pay by 5.3% and to reduce the salaries of non-teaching workers by 2%. Administrators have already accepted a 5.3% pay cut to help balance the budget.

County education officials initially rejected Montebello's spending plan, but officials recently reversed their decision.
