NHL ROUNDUP : Timely Break Saves Lightning

February 11, 1995|From Associated Press

Was it or wasn't it?

Nobody will know for sure because when the Hartford Whalers protested a goal by Tampa Bay's Petr Klima that beat them, 4-3, Friday at St. Petersburg, Fla., he destroyed the evidence.

With 2:35 to play, Klima scored on a power play and the Whalers immediately shouted that he had an illegal stick. When referee Paul Stewart approached him, Klima broke off the blade with his skate.

Klima, who leads the Lightning with seven goals and 11 points, was evasive when asked if the stick was legal.

"I don't know, you tell me," he said. "I broke it."

The goal gave the Lightning sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division.
